Do you have to talk during a massage? Pressure, silence and what to expect

Quiet is the thing people mention most often after a session here, and it raises a question nobody quite knows the etiquette for. Are you meant to chat, or is silence actually the point? The honest answer is that it is entirely up to you, but a few things are worth knowing either way.

Do you have to talk during a massage?

No. Some sessions are chatty from start to finish and some are almost silent, and neither is more normal than the other. Once your therapist knows what you want worked on, there is nothing else required of you. Plenty of people close their eyes within the first few minutes and stay that way for the rest of the hour, and that is not read as unfriendly, it is read as someone who came in to switch off.

What your therapist actually needs to know, and when

Two moments matter. At the start, a quick rundown of what feels tight, sore or worth avoiding gives your therapist what they need to plan the session. During it, only one thing is actually required of you: say something if the pressure is not right, or if an area needs less attention. Outside of those two moments, conversation is entirely optional.

How to ask for more or less pressure during a massage

A short, direct line is all it takes: a touch firmer here, or that is perfect, or can you ease off there. You do not need the technical name for what is being worked on, and you are not interrupting anything by speaking up mid-session. It is worth doing early rather than quietly enduring the wrong pressure for an hour, since a small adjustment at the two minute mark is far easier than sitting through a full session that did not suit you.

Music, or silence during your massage, whichever you prefer

Music plays at a low volume by default, and it is entirely your call. Ask for it off and the room is simply quiet, with nothing to listen to but the studio itself, which tends to be very little. Mention your preference when you arrive and it is set for the whole session, no need to ask twice.

What happens if you go quiet or fall asleep during your massage

Nothing, other than the session continuing exactly as planned. Falling asleep partway through is common and never seen as odd, and your therapist will simply wake you gently at the end if you have drifted off. There is nowhere else to be and nothing rushing you back to the world.

Frequently asked questions

Is it rude to stay quiet the whole time?

Not at all. Many clients say very little beyond the initial rundown, and it is one of the more common ways people use the hour.

What if I want to change the pressure halfway through?

Say so whenever it occurs to you. Adjustments happen instantly and do not need a reason attached.

Can I ask for no conversation at all?

Yes. Mention it at the start and your therapist will follow your lead for the rest of the session.

Will my therapist think it's odd if I fall asleep?

No, it happens often and is taken as a sign the session is doing exactly what it is meant to.

However you spend the hour, talking through it or entirely silent, it is yours to use as you like. Read what to expect at your first visit if you are still deciding, or check availability online when you are ready to book one in.

“Such a great experience at Fern & Soul. The clinic itself is modern and beautifully presented, with a calm and relaxing atmosphere from the moment you walk in. Amy was incredibly welcoming and made me feel comfortable straight away. I had a remedial massage and was really impressed with her technique — she clearly knows what she’s doing and worked on exactly the areas that needed attention. I left feeling so much better and will definitely be back. Highly recommend Amy and Fern & Soul if you’re looking for a great remedial massage in a welcoming, calming space.”
