Choosing the right essential oils for massage

Small amber dropper bottle and a dish of carrier oil beside fresh eucalyptus and lavender sprigs on a raw timber clinic shelf.

The oil used in a massage is part of the treatment, not an afterthought. The right essential oil can shape the whole mood of a session — and the wrong one can be distracting. Here's how we think about it.

Why the oil matters

Scent is closely tied to how relaxed we feel, so the oil you smell for an hour genuinely affects the experience. Beyond aroma, a well-chosen blend helps the hands glide and sets the tone — calming and grounding, or fresh and clearing. It's a small detail that makes a real difference to how a massage lands.

A few oils we reach for

  • Lavender — soft, floral and widely loved for winding down. A reliable choice when the goal is simply to relax.
  • Eucalyptus — fresh and clearing, with that familiar Australian sharpness. A nice match for firmer, more focused work.
  • Peppermint — bright and cooling, lovely in small amounts when you want something invigorating rather than sleepy.
  • Sweet orange — warm and gently uplifting, an easy crowd-pleaser that suits most people.

Telling us what you prefer

There's no single "best" oil — it comes down to what you enjoy and what suits the session. If a scent reminds you of something you'd rather not think about, or you simply don't like it, say so and we'll switch. We'd always rather adjust than have you lie there putting up with it.

Sensitivities and what to mention

If you have allergies, sensitive skin, asthma, or you're pregnant, let us know when you book. We can go fragrance-free or use a plain carrier oil — the massage works just as well. Comfort comes first, every time.
