Does massage flush lactic acid?
The one study that measured this found massage impaired lactate removal rather than helping it. And lactic acid is not what makes you sore anyway.

This is the most repeated explanation for what a massage does, and it is the easiest one to check, because somebody measured it.
The short version
- The claim has been tested directly and it failed. A 2010 study titled "Massage impairs postexercise muscle blood flow and 'lactic acid' removal" found exactly that.1
- Muscle biopsies confirm it. A study that found real biological effects of massage measured lactate specifically and found no effect.2
- The premise is wrong regardless. Lactate clears within about an hour after exercise. Muscle soreness peaks at 24 to 72 hours.3
- Massage still helps with soreness, and does so for other reasons.4
What the study found
In 2010 a study measured forearm blood flow and lactate removal after strenuous exercise, comparing massage against simply resting. The title of the paper is the finding: Massage impairs postexercise muscle blood flow and "lactic acid" removal.1
Blood flow was higher at passive rest than with massage: 766 mL per minute resting, against 540 mL per minute with massage. Lactate efflux followed the same pattern. The authors concluded that massage impairs lactate and hydrogen ion removal from muscle after strenuous exercise by mechanically impeding blood flow.
That is not a null result. It is the opposite of the claim.
A second, independent line of evidence points the same way. The 2012 Science Translational Medicine study that took muscle biopsies after damaging exercise found genuine biological effects of massage, including reduced inflammatory signalling. It measured lactate as well, and found no effect.2
The bigger problem with the claim
Even if massage did clear lactate, it would not explain the thing it is invoked to explain.
Exercise lactate is cleared by the body within roughly an hour. Delayed onset muscle soreness, the ache that sends people to book a massage, develops over 24 to 72 hours after the session that caused it.3 By the time the soreness arrives, the lactate is long gone.
Delayed onset muscle soreness is associated with microscopic damage to muscle fibres and the inflammatory response to it, not with an acid sitting in the tissue waiting to be squeezed out. Lactate is also not the villain it was cast as: it is a fuel the body actively recycles.
What massage does do for soreness
Quite a lot, as it happens. A review of 99 studies comparing post-exercise recovery techniques found massage was the most effective single technique for reducing muscle soreness and perceived fatigue, with moderate reductions in creatine kinase, interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein.4
So the outcome people want from the myth is real. The mechanism they are given for it is not. The likely explanations are the reduced inflammatory signalling measured in biopsies2 and the nervous system response that reduces pain sensitivity.5
Worth knowing alongside it: the largest review of sports massage, covering 29 studies and 1,012 participants, found no evidence that massage improves strength, jump, sprint, endurance or fatigue. It found small improvements in flexibility and in soreness only.6 Massage makes you feel less sore. It does not make you perform better.
Why the myth persists
Because the sensation is real and it needs an explanation. You feel heavy and sore, someone works on the muscle, and afterwards it feels different. "Flushing the acid out" is a vivid, physical story that matches the sensation of being pressed on.
The true explanation, that the change is largely in the nervous system rather than in the muscle, is harder to picture and impossible to feel directly. That is a communication problem, not a reason to keep repeating something a study measured and disproved.
